Casella
Crashes
Team Manager/Director Gary Casella took
a nasty fall after the Bogus Basin Hill climb.
He was descending with Tad Hamilton and on one of the
curves apparently hit some sand that was on the road after
the heavy rains from earlier in the week, and hit the
ground going over 30+ mph. Sliding to a halt, Casella
seemed to take the fall hard on his left side and had
some serious road rash and cuts to his left hand.
Thanks to Mrs. McGill, Tad and everyone who stopped to
lend a hand. Gary was later taken to St. Luke's Medical
Center in Boise to get looked at and on his way to
recovering. |

Team
takes 2nd, 9th and 13th at Bogus
Team iomega-Orbea rode solid today in
one of Idaho's biggest events the annual Bogus Basin Hill
climb.
Close to 15 miles in length and rises above 6000' above
sea level the 3000'+ verticle ride up to the Bogus Basin
Ski resort is a popular one for area cyclists and the
race draws 250-300 riders.
The race went well for the team as Matt Weyen hung on
to make the final selection of riders and finish 2nd overall.
Steve Parker had another impressive outing with his solid
9th place and Justin Mayfield rounded out the team's top
placings finishing just behind Steve in 13th. Tad Hamilton
and Gary Casella also finished the race but were a bit
further back.
The race is the traditional closer for the local Idaho
Road season. |

Highlights
from Interbike 2003, a look back.
Last year as I came to Las Vegas for the
Interbike expo, I brought with me Esteban Jukich to help
me out and to visit Vegas for the first time before heading
back to Uruguay. Esteban did a great job helping
me out but he also organized each of his days to see all
the cool new gear and visit all the cycling stars that
were in town for the show.
2003 was special in that with the World Championships
in Canada many cycling stars made their trip to Vegas
to do some PR work. |

Tablerock
Hill Climb
The iomega-Orbea team rolled out its
new team colors today and rode an impressive ride at the
Tablerock Hill Climb. Justin Mayfield was looking
to defend his title from 2003 only to be watched by the
entire pack. Steve Parker fresh off his Mt. Harrison
victory was up front when he had a mechanical problem
that had him drop off the pace. Mayfield attacked
and Weyen later followed as they both finished comfortably
in the top 10 with solid rides. |

Parker
soars to victory at Mt. Harrison
iomega-Orbea rider Steve Parker soloed
to victory up Mt Harrison a scenic tough climb that takes
you to the Pomerelle ski resort.
The iomega trio of Parker, Matt Weyen and Justin Mayfield
paced the field as Weyen and another rider motored away
up the road. As the climb began to bite Mayfield
and Parker slowly reeled in the lead duo and soon after
Parker launched an attack that saw him blast by a fading
Weyen and into the lead.
Parker held off a late charge by Mayfield to cap a one
two finish with Weyen regrouping and coming in 4th.
A great performance from Steve Parker and looks to be
a rider to watch next season as the roads tilt upward. |

Ransom was released from the team.
Details were not disclosed but Team Manager and Director
Gary Casella stated:
"Eric has had a tough year with injury, setbacks
and trying to do too much to meet his obligations
to iomega-Orbea and also trying to do his
own NORBA MTB schedule. I wish Eric the best
of luck in the future as he is a gifted rider with a
lot of potential if he can stay focused and mature along
the way." |

Gonchi
Sprints to 2nd, Jukich 7th at Morning after Crit.
The morning after Criterium was tougher
than it looked with the wind and competitive field looking
to ride strong all day. Team Subway was in full
force looking to erase memories from the night before
where they rode well, but didn't end up on the podium.
iomega was well represented and looking for a podium finish
here at the Morning after crit.
After many attempts from various riders to break the packs
grip, a good breakaway by iomega's Esteban Jukich and
a Subway rider got away only to later be brought back
later on. Form there on out it counter attacks and
small breakaways only to come back together for
a final mad dash to the finish.
In the sprint Gonzalo Tagliabue dove into the final turn
to gain position in what he described as "I just
threw myself in there, praying I'd stay upright"
and sprinted home for great second place finish.
Esteban Jukich finished strong after his long breakaway
to come home in 7th. |

solidly at the Summer Track series held over at Chaparral

miss and out event. Given the competition, this
was a great ride by Parker.
Manager Gary Casella who also took 14th in the miss and

has made tremendous gains this year thus far and I am
very happy to see him start to ride up to his potential,
as he is only really scratching the surface. He'll

The criterium in downtown Missoula today
saw iomega-Orbea's pocket rocket Esteban Jukich finish

Esteban sprinted his way towards a top 10 finish in
the miss and out format criterium.
The overall classification saw iomega-Orbea's Matt Weyen

Weyen 2nd &
iomega-Orbea places four in the top 10 at Eagle Hills.
Matt Weyen broke away with John
Osgulthorpe, Michael Tobin and iomega-Orbea's Gonzalo
Tagliabue in the early stages of the difficult
Eagle Hills circuit race. Tagliabue and Tobin dropped
off and Weyen and company increased their lead on the
field to keep them at bay.
In the run into the finish team iomega covered every move
as riders tried to chase the break away down, with one
rider sliping away just before the finish. In the
final lap up the steep grade to the finish Weyen took
2nd followed by teammates Tagliabue in 5th, Esteban
Jukich in 6th and Justin Mayfield
in 7th. |

iomega-Orbea
stays agressive in Kuna.
At the Kuna Butte road race team iomega-Orbea went again
with an agressive plan and early into the race Chris Abbruzzese was
off an running on a 15 mile solo move.
Soon after his return to the peloton and heading
into the last climb Justin Mayfield took matters into
his own hands to drive it to the finish. Justin's
powerful move made the races selection and was joined
at the top of the climb by a group of riders including
teammates Tad Hamilton and Gonzalo Tagliabue.
With 2 miles to go Gonzalo attacks and heads for home
only to be caught by an in form Andrew Davis of Team George's,
who catches and sprints away as they are in sight of the
finish. Gonzalo sprints home for second place
only to be DQ'd as he crossed the yellow line, something
he's not used to doing. In Uruguay all races have rolling
enclosures and the racers have full access to the roads.
The team finished strong with Tad taking 7th, Justin 8th
and Chris coming in 13th.
In the Cat. 3 race iomega-Orbea's development rider Steven
Parker took home 8th place. |

Team
gels with new Uruguayan riders
iomega-Orbea got to race the Emmett-Roubaix
race with its returning Uruguayan rider Esteban Jukich
who rode brilliantly at the Vuelta de Uruguay, and newest
team member Gonzalo Tagliabue.
Emmett-Roubaix is the final race of the George's
spring road series and iomega-Orbea was out to ride well.
Right from the gun Chris Abbruzzese recovering from his
Vuelta crash and Justin Mayfield attacked and ignighted
the race. After a few attacks Chris slipped away
for a few miles leading up to the first climb of the day.
iomega-Orbea attacked with Gonzalo, Gary Casella, and
Gonzalo again after the climb who slipped away for a solo
move, and was later caught before the firsttrip through
the Roubaix (dirt) section of the circuit.
Shortly thereafter the break of the day containg iomega-Orbea
team Captain Tad Hamilton was formed. Tad rode superbly
but as in the Vuelta bad luck reared its ugly head and
on this very hot and sunny afternoon Tad lost his full
water bottle in the Roubaix section of the race.
Later iomega top GC leader sitting int he top 3 overall,
Matt Weyen flatted and Gonzalo gave him his wheel to stay
in contact...a few miles later he flatted again and Justin
gave up his wheel to him...only to get lost on the country
roads that all look the same heading towards the finish.
Tad bonked hard without any drink for almost 20 miles
in very hot tempatures and Esteban in his first race back
in the USA took a solid 6th place for the day. Great
team work and selfless riding today, we just need lady
luck on our side. |

Vuelta
tune ups go well
Both iomega-Orbea squads rode
well on Sunday. With the Idaho Based team taking
5th (Mayfield), 7th (Abbruzzese)
as well as two more top 20 finishes. Tad
Hamilton rode strongly as he was a main force in
the day being in the races most successful move.
In Uruguay all the teams showed up in full force for
their final tuneup before their National tour. Early
in the 190Km race a break of 3 riders got clear and
put 4 minutes into the pack. The stiff crosswinds
proved too much for the main pack as it got shredded
to many small groups. As they turned into the
wind Esteban Jukich
was in the first chase group of 15 riders with the remaining
field and Gary Casella
some 45 seconds back. The pack became unmotivated
and many riders prefered to rest up and abandoned the
race leaving a dwindling chase group. Casella
and three others set off in chase.
At the end only 30 riders finished with Esteban in
the first chase pack and feeling good after the days
tough efforts, and Casella came in as one of the last
finishers as more riders abandoned with only around
30 finishers out of some 80+ starters.
With everyone finishing upright and healthy, the team
now focuses on the Vuelta thats starts next Friday.
The few remaining Boise based riders not contesting
the Vuelta will tackle a new Idaho event, Hillsdale/Star
Ridge Circuit race April 4th.

Team
on track in early season.
The opening Boise area race "the slammer"
took place this past weekend with clear skies but windy
conditions. iomega-Orbea fielded the team of Mayfield,
Abbruzzese, Hamilton
and Parker for the 40 mile event. The race was
fast from the gun and tough with the stiff wind. Abbruzzese
with Mayfield took 6th and 7th a few seconds back from
the lead group, confirming their decent early season
form as the team builds for the Vuelta and the long
season ahead.
In Uruguay, Esteban Jukich
and Gary Casella contested
the first race in a two race series called the Vuelta
de Carasco. The races was held in hot 85 degree
temperatures and a good wind. The race was 110
miles long and fast from the start with a a small group
breaking away. As they got caught some 30 miles
later another group formed containing 12 riders including
Jukich. This group grew a maximum lead of 2 minutes
and Jukich contesting and taking the lead in the Cima
(KOM) competition. The gap started to shrink as the
lead group started attacking each other with riders
falling off the pace some 20 miles to go. In the
end the group stayed away and Jukich finished 7th overall.
Roughly 1:30 later the field containing Casella
crossed the line. Total race time was 4:03.
The team is on track so far in 2004 with lofty goals
ahead, stay tuned for more news. |

Jukich 6th
in rain soaked race Esteban
Jukich confirmed he's coming into form for the upcoming
Vuelta de Uruguay. In the rain
soaked race Esteban competed the 100Km race with team
director Gary Casella making
his 2004 race debut. In the 2km circuit
in Trinidad, Uruguay, the race was quick from
the gun and then settled into groove. Later Jukich
puntured and Casella manned the front of the pack as a
series of attcked came from the pack. Jukich caught
back on and with 30km to go Casella abandoned after another
flurry of attacks. "The changes of rythem and
pace just made my legs heavy...good training though as
I tried to stay towards the front all day....just got
caught out and couldn't close the gaps anymore."
n Jukich then was in a the break of the day as 6 riders
went clear. They built a max 1:30 lead before the
Athenas de Soriano team lead the charge back and with
10km to go it was all back together. Another small
group split off with Jukich recovering in the pack. Previous
Vuelta winner Jose Asconeguy went clear with 2km to go
and held on to the win as the rest got caught in the rush
to the line with Jukich taking 6th. "I just
didn't have the jump in my legs as they gained a bike
length in the initial acceleration." Esteban said
after the race. |

Ransom comes

lined up this past Sunday with Eric
Ransom back from Durango, Colorado to start his first
race back in Idaho. Fresh off his season opening win,
Eric and the team were motivated to do well. Tad
Hamilton and Ransom started strong and forced the
final selection with one lap remaining. Two riders slipped
away before the finish as the pack roared to the line
and Ransom being lead out by Hamilton, sprinted home for
third place. Not a bad homecoming to be on the podium.
Ransom and Hamilton are on track for their Vuelta
de Uruguay appearance coming up in roughly a

2004 Season
Opener iomega-Orbea rider
Tad Hamilton started off 2004
with a strong showing in the Idaho season opener the Limited
gear race in Boise Idaho. Tad was aggressive from the
start and was what turned out to be the winning 5 man

2004 with Win Eric
Ransom iomega-Orbea's most successful
rider in 2003 started off the new 04 season with a solid
showing at his season debut. Ransom took part in the Ft.
Lewis Turtle Lake Individual intersquad Time trial.
Eric put 27 seconds into his nearest rival and is looking
forward to a strong 2004 season. One of Eric's goals is
a strong showing in the Vuelta de Uruguay
in which he will be one of the team's designated GC co-leaders
going the race. With his strong start, he's looking to
be right on track to being on form for the Vuelta. Eric
has worked hard over the winter months training hard and
being more focused than ever. If his season debut is any
indication of 2004, this year could be his best ever. |

goals are to have everything prepared and ready to have

race routes. He has signed on Jorge Jukich
to be the team's consultant and assistant Director for
the team while iomega-Obrea is in Uruguay. Jorge is none
other than iomega-Orbea rider Esteban Jukich's father
and multiple Vuelta participant. He was a very good rider
in his day and well respected in the
cycling community with a few second place overall GC finishes
in the Vuelta de Uruguay to his credit. He still is a
cycling advocate and club and event organizer in the last
few years and his experience and knowledge will come in

iomega-Orbea rider Esteban
Jukich returned to racing in the 14th edition of the
Vuelta de Chana in Uruguay. Coming
off his base training and starting his build in form to
be ready for his upcoming national tour the Vuelta
de Uruguay, Jukich found himself riding better
and stronger than before.
After finishing in the lead group of 30 on the tough and
windy stage 1, Esteban surprised himself with a fine TT
time in stage 2. Stage 3 saw Jukich take a solid
top 20 and moved him into the top 20 in GC. The
4th and final stage was a 4km circuit race that was fast
and furious on a rough race course. Esteban finished
strong and placed in the top 15 overall in General Classification.

Team still

With the recent cancellation of the Vuelta de Argentina,
Team Manager Gary Casella
is looking into the possibilities to still have the squad
head to South America to compete a major
stage race there. Casella believes its a positive step
in the development in the squad. " A national tour
in South America is treated the same as in Europe with
crowds, TV coverage and good tough racing. I look at it
as a great challenge and experience for the team this
year and another step for the development for the riders
I have." Stay tuned to see where the team may go. |

Vuelta de
Argentina Cancelled.
The 2004 Vuelta de Argentina was cancelled
recently due to the lack of support and moreso the lack
of time to prepare and have the race run 100% right. In
speaking with race director Angel Dilucca, Team Manager
Gary Casella was assured
the team would get another invitation for the event when
it resumes in 2005 with a whole year to plan and prepare
for a great National tour. Senor Dilicca believes its
best to do it right or not at all and so as tough as a
decision it was for him and his staff to make, plan on
seeing the Vuelta de Argentina on the UCI calendar in

Tad 22nd
at US Cross Nationals on wet & muddy track
Tad Hamilton took 22nd place
after battling back after being held up behind a crash
soon after the start. Tad, who was iomega's most consistent
finisher during all of 2003 said "After the crash,
getting shuffled back to like 50th place and all the
rain and over 5 inches of mud, I thought of just hopping
off, but I didn't" Soon after the second lap where
he lost most of his time Tipo began to find a rhythm
and pick off riders in front of him "On the hard
packed stuff I was flying and passing people every lap,
the sludging through the mud wasn't best suited for
me, but I was making up ground." Finishing strong
Tad nearly broke the top 20, disappointed as his goal
was a solid top 10. "had the track been what I
had wished for, hard, cold and fast, I think it would
have swung in my favor as I was one of the fastest on
the faster part of the course. I felt good, strong,
but in the thick mud ... I couldn't find my rhythm to
slug it out. Mentally the bad start bummed me out."
Team iomega Manager Gary Casella is very happy of Tad's
good finish. "Tad is a fighter, and the conditions
didn't suit him, but he was ready and fit and fast.
For him to finish strong after the poor start and passing
almost half the field, I'm very proud of what he did
and not quit. I know Tad wanted to do well at the Cyclocross
Nationals."

die attitude and good form hope to propel him toward the
top of the leaderboard. A few months ago Tad raced against
the country's best cross riders and was the last rider
to finish on the lead lap in miserable conditions. "If
the track is fast, I think I can surprise a few people."
Tad said. He has been seen around Boise tearing it up
and going hard in preparation for the Nationals. Cyclocross
is a combination of road cycling and mountain biking as
they race on dirt or grass and also requires some running
as well as mounting and dismounting your bike on the go.
Stay tuned for more details and check out Tad and the
rest of his iomega-Orbea team at www.roadbicycling.com

Tipo Wins
Eagle Island Cross Series
Conditions at the Eagle Island Cyclocross race
were bad, but for Tad Hamilton
of iomega-Orbea, that was the last thing on his mind.
With his sick baby boy Hudson having to undergo some unpleasant
testing at Saint Luke's hospital. With his win, he dedicated
his victory to his son Hudson, by symbolically rocking
the cradle as he crossed the finish line.
Racers took off like they were being shot from a canon,
turning the small pack into a spread out single file
line in just a few minutes. Tad would leave the group
quickly and never come back. Team George's rider Mike
Kennedy put in a good effort and great race, coming
in around only 30 seconds behind Tad. <photos>
