June 25...
The Uruguayan national team or
Milton Wynants and Agustin Margalef took to the Velodrome
at the Alpenrose track in Porland, Oregon. There they
proceeded to ride with the best Americans in the country.
They were accompanied by their team director Hugo
Scrycky and US liason Team iomega-Orbea's Gary Casella who
arranged the trip.
In the opening event a 10 mile
scratch race. they dominated the competition
and finished 1st and 2nd. Wynants taking the top podium
step. In the Miss and Out event when they dwinlded the field
to the final four riders there was Wynants and Margalef
again, but this time they finished 2nd and 4th.
In the team Madison event one
of the events they will compete in at the
upcomiong Olympics in Athens, they were agressive and took
charge early on and never looked back. They're hand
sling exchanges were fast and smooth and their photo even
made the Velonews.com website! They were cheered by
all the crowd as they finished and later took the top podium
step in their victory.
The Points race was their last
event at the Alpenrose Challenge and another event Wynants
current 2004 Silver medalist at the recent World Championships
in this dicipline will participate in Athens. Once
again Margalef and Wynants had all the moves covered and
made the breakk
that split off 6 of the best riders who lapped the field.
There Scrkychy
showed his cards and took a taktical risk that seemed to
pay off until a trio of riders jumped off the front andgain
catching Wynants out of position. As they rallied
they stayed close but the break driven by Team US Postal
Service and recent Cascade Classic winner Micheal Creed
held off the rapid pack. In the end Margalef was 3rd
and Wynants finished 5th.
A great showing by the Natiuonal
team from Uruguay and they seemed to really make a connection
with the local race fans there at Alpenrose.
Thanks to Lonnie and Mike Murry for their support and assisitance
in making the Alpenrose Challenge a success for the team.
