An early breakaway of three stayed away for 120Km before the were joined by a chase group of six riders. This critical move was made with 45 Km in the race with 9 riders away including 2003 Pan American road Champion Milton Wynants, and the rain began to fall hard.

A few kilometers later Esteban Jukich and four other riders broke away from the field in chase of the leaders. After 30Km of chasing they joined the lead group.

With the finish line approaching riders began to attack the lead group. A small group of five split away and dangled in front of the remaining chasers. Esteban tired from his pursuit was hoping it would all bunch back up together, but the lead group of five pulled away in the rain. The second group finished just behind as they crossed the line. Esteban used his quick finish to take third in the chase group thus taking 8th place out of 90 starters.
